History:
Studio Energy & Motion, formerly known as Joy's School of Dance, Inc., was started in the fall of 1989 by founder, Joy Garrett, with the goal of giving rural children professional but affordable dance instruction. May of 2017, Casey Boyles became owner and artistic director. Studio E & M offers training from Beginner to Advanced Levels for ages 2 & up.
Classes Offered
Studio Energy and Motion offers classes in Creative Movement, Ballet, Tap, Pointe, Jazz, Modern, Lyrical, Hip-Hop and Tumbling. We have recently started offering art lessons. Most students begin with a one hour ballet/tap combo class a week until they reach the age of 9 or 10. Then students are placed in "levels" according to their technique and ability.
Sessions:
Summer - we offer a 6 week summer session. This session begins in June and runs through mid-July. On the last class of the summer session, students will put on an informal performance to show family members what they have learned.
Full Dance Season - Our dance season begins the Tuesday after Labor Day and ends with Recital in mid-May. We have 2 parent observation classes throughout the year to allow parents to view progression.
Performances:
Spring Recital -
All students enrolled in the full dance season participate in our spring recital. The recital is usually held the second or third weekend in May at Amelia County High School at 7:00pm.
Winter Show -
Students enrolled in Intermediate and Advanced level classes have the opportunity to participate in our Winter Show. This is not a mandatory performance. Past performances include: The Nutcracker, The Nutcracker All Jazzed Up, Scrooge and the Holiday Extravaganza.
Competition/Performance Teams:
For the serious dancer, we offer the opportunity to be a part of our Shimmer/Sparkler Dance Team. Our dance team is made of dancers from age 8 and up. You must audition in the two-week intensive program for a spot on the Shimmer/Sparkler team and must be enrolled in 4 hours of dance classes for the summer and fall sessions. The Shimmers/Sparklers perform at various community events throughout the year and have the opportunity to travel throughout Virginia and surrounding states to attend dance workshops and competitions.
